Governor Walker’s Vetoes Make Bad Budget Worse, Misses Opportunities

(MADISON) – Senator Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement after Governor Walker issued partial vetoes and signed the 2017-2019 budget into law:

“For the third straight budget, Governor Walker missed out on opportunities to invest in our people and implement best practices. Education, which has faced historic cuts under Governor Walker, was not made whole.

“Repeatedly, we have been shown the best practices that even the reddest States like Texas have acknowledged works for education, re-entry, and job readiness. When we should have been breaking the pipeline to prison - to be put on the correct path to address the disparities that exist in education, incarceration, and wealth attainment - Governor Walker reinforced the pipeline to prison by not accepting the Council of State Governments’ (CSG) 2009 recommendations, rejecting the CSG's recent offer for technical assistance, and by not following the IRES recommendations which would address the needed reforms in our community justice programs.”
