(MADISON) Today, Senator Lena C. Taylor (D-Milwaukee), ranking member on the Senate Committee on Elections and Urban Affairs issued the following statement expressing deep concern following the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals striking down significant portions of Wisconsin’s campaign finance law:

“Today’s decision washes away one of Wisconsin’s finest traditions: ensuring the integrity of every election through fair, open, and transparent rules. State laws regulating campaign contributions were overturned in favor of corporate spending and special interest groups. This disappointing decision shifts the balance of power away from the citizens of Wisconsin and into the hands of wealthy donors.”

By eliminating reporting requirements and concealing the identities of campaign advertisers, this ruling casts a dark shadow over the political process. Voters have a right to know who is influencing Wisconsin’s elections, and they need to be able to discern between the messages flooding the state’s airwaves. Instead, this decision promises that the voices of outside groups, not Wisconsin’s communities and advocates, will be heard.”

Freedom and individual liberty is protected and our society is most healthy when the individuals who are casting votes are informed, and have an equal opportunity to make their voices heard. Allowing the free exchange of ideas cannot come at the expense of a person’s voice being stifled. The First Amendment should not be used as a tool by the wealthy to overwhelm and silence others.”

As ranking member on the Senate Elections and Urban Affairs Committee, I accept the task of standing up for the least among us, and the millions of Wisconsinites who want their voices heard, and will fight for legislation the helps to protect and balance the freedom of speech while promoting greater transparency in our state.”
