Taylor Praises Senate for Initiating Change on Key Issues

State Senate Passes Bills on Mortgage Brokers and Improving Mental Health Treatment

(MADISON) Senator Lena C. Taylor (D-Milwaukee) praises the State Senate for the passage of two bills previously heard in the Committee on Judiciary, Corrections, Insurance, Campaign Finance Reform and Housing. Senator Lena C. Taylor has been a primary supporter of these proposals, authoring Senate Bill 478 and Assembly Bill 471.

“I am more than pleased that the Senate has passed these bills. Although looking at very different issues, each piece of legislation creates standards that will contribute to a stronger Wisconsin in its own way,” Taylor commented.

• Assembly Bill 471 creates standards of practice for mortgage brokers by outlining six responsibilities that these professionals have to Wisconsin borrowers. The bill is co-authored by Representatives Leon Young (D-Milwaukee) and is a recommendation of the Speaker’s Taskforce on Preventing Home Foreclosures. Governor Doyle is expected to sign the bill into law.
• Senate Bill 478 aligns the requirements and limitations of involuntary commitment for incarcerated individuals with those for individuals who are a part of the general public. The bill, supported by the departments of Health Services and Corrections, will extend need mental health treatment to most seriously ill offenders. The bill is authored by Senators Taylor and Representatives Sandy Pasch (D-Whitefish Bay), and now goes to the Assembly for its consideration.
