Taylor Confronts Racial Profiling in the City of Milwaukee
June Clinic will address Racial Profiling and the Rights of Milwaukee Citizens
(MADISON) Senator Lena C. Taylor (D-Milwaukee) and Greater New Birth Church will be holding a “Know Your Rights” legal clinic that focuses on racial profiling in the city of Milwaukee. This clinic and panel discussion hopes to address many of the concerns of Milwaukee residents following a number of racial profiling incidents and the release of a study that noted 76% of all the incidents that resulted in use of force by the Milwaukee Police department involved African
American subjects.
“For years racial profiling has been a serious issue in the Milwaukee area and it is time we get serious and address the issue,” Taylor noted. “This is not only about racial profiling, this is about the many aspects that go along with creating a stronger justice system, such as cultural sensitivity, diversity training, efficient citizen complaint processing, and most importantly community involvement and awareness. It is time that we stop ignoring the severity of the problem and bring together elected officials, heads of the police force and community members so that we can have open and honest dialogue and take steps toward getting the problem solved.”
The Clinic will be held in Milwaukee on Saturday June 26, 2010 at Greater New Birth Church, which is located at 8237 W. Silver Spring. The Clinic will run from 9 am to 12 pm. The program will include a showing of a “know Your Rights” DVD, a panel made up of community leaders, government officials, police department representatives, and time for community members to voice opinions. If you would like to act as event volunteer, please contact Senator Taylor’s office at 608-266-5810.
