STATEMENT ON REPUBLICAN SALES TAX INCREASE

(MADISON)  State Senator Lena C. Taylor (D-Milwaukee) today issued the below statement on a possible 50% sales tax increase floated by the incoming Walker administration.

“News of the possible 2.1 billion dollar tax increase by Republicans is shocking to Wisconsin working families.  Not one Republican in power has said ‘we will not raise the sales tax’.  To working families, I issue a warning: to balance the budget in Wisconsin, it appears that Republicans are ready to tax you more for your clothes, your cars, your computers, your cell phones, your furniture. But even more troubling is the fact that the Republicans plan to cut the taxes on major corporations and the wealthiest in our state.”

“Now is the time for Republican leadership to stand up and put an end to this sales tax increase talk. Now is the time for Republicans to announce viable and sustainable ways to fund our state that will create jobs and are based on the ability to pay.”

Taylor has served on the Joint Committee on Finance which oversees the state budget and will continue as ranking member of the committee in the coming session.
