Taylor responds to DOC Building Projections

Justice Reinvestment will analyze trends, create policy change

(MADISON) In response to the Ten–Year Facility Development Plan released today by the Department of Corrections, Senator Lena C Taylor (D-Milwaukee) issued the following response.

“In a time of fiscal crisis in our state, it will take leadership and vision to develop short-term and long-term policy changes.  The Justice Reinvestment Initiative has resulted in massive savings in other states, including Texas, which saved over $200 million per year and halted construction of two prisons after their study.  Our committee will work to achieve the maximum possible savings without compromising public safety,” Taylor explains.

The Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI) Oversight Committee was created to address exorbitant state corrections spending.  Using a data-driven process, the committee will develop policies to improve public safety, reduce recidivism, reduce population growth.

“Secretary Raemisch hits the nail head-on about identifying options beyond brick and mortar.   The ten-year building plan for the Department of Corrections shows the incredible need for change of our current corrections policies.  With anticipated growth of 8,920 new prison beds in the next 10 years at a cost of $1.2 billion, it is evident Wisconsin needs a new direction and new approach to our state’s corrections system”, Taylor commented.
