Senator Taylor to Escort Governor Doyle to State of the State Address

MADISON – On Wednesday, State Senator Lena C. Taylor (D-Milwaukee) will escort Governor Jim Doyle as he prepares to deliver his State of the State Address.  Senator Taylor is the first African American woman accorded the honor of escorting a Wisconsin governor at the event.

“It’s truly an honor,” said Taylor. “Just to be selected is a privilege, but the history behind it makes it that much more special.  I’m really looking forward to it.”

As a powerful and outspoken advocate for Milwaukee, Taylor’s selection highlights that city’s growing importance.  During her five years as a legislator, Taylor has built a reputation for her staunch support of Milwaukee’s public schools and transit system.

“The best part is to be there representing the citizens of Milwaukee,” Taylor pointed out. “For five years, I’ve fought for them.  Any extra attention I can bring to their needs—whether it’s better housing, reducing teen pregnancy, or anything else—it’s something I’m grateful for.”

Taylor’s role escorting Governor Doyle also underscores Milwaukee’s important place in the governor’s plans for Wisconsin.  It is anticipated that the State of the State will focus primarily on revitalizing Wisconsin’s economy.  If that is the case, then Milwaukee, as Wisconsin’s largest economy and commercial center, should figure prominently.

“Like I’ve always said, as goes Milwaukee so goes Wisconsin,” Taylor said. “Any plan for the state’s future has to take that into account.  Fortunately, I’ll be there to remind Governor Doyle of that in the moments before he walks to the podium.”

Each year, four legislators are selected to escort the governor from his office to the Assembly chambers for the State of the State Address.  Taylor, Senator Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau), Representative Kim Hixson (D-Whitewater), and Representative Lee Nerison (R-Westby) are this year’s escorts.
