Atwater
School Visit
Senator Taylor visited Atwater
Elementary School to talk with some of her youngest constituents
about her job as a State Senator. While meeting with the 4th
graders, she discussed the different levels of government, how a
bill becomes a law, and her work within and around the Milwaukee
community. Senator Taylor encourages students to be active and
informed when it comes to politics and the government, especially
with election season upon us. Although these students are a couple
years away from voting, it is more important than ever to keep them
informed about the community they live in. Afterwards the floor was
opened for discussion so the students could ask their hard hitting
questions. The Senator is happy to say that there were multiple
future politicians among the students!

Juvenile Corrections
Study Committee Meeting
On Tuesday, Senator Taylor
attended another meeting of the Juvenile Corrections Study
Committee to make a recommendation on locations for what will be a
Department of Corrections Type 1 facility. We began to
discuss prototypes for these facilities, heard from consultants
regarding background information on our vision and goals for the
project. We reviewed what we wanted the facilities to look like,
their functionality, and a list of criteria for these sites.
We also discussed moving forward with our study committee
recommendations to the Department of Corrections. This process is
continuing to move quickly and more updates are forthcoming.

Assata
High School Visit
Senator Taylor had the pleasure of visiting and speaking with the
students of Assata High School on
Wednesday about the importance of civic engagement and voting.
Senator Taylor brought provisional ballots and mock voting booths
to simulate better help students understand what to expect when
they get the opportunity to cast their first votes in an election. Assata is a student centered program for
at-risk high school students. Senator Taylor also offered words of
advice and encouragement to help keep the students engaged through
the rest of the semester and talked to them about the importance of
completing their education.

Milwaukee
County Hemp Resolution
Senator
Taylor met with 12th District Milwaukee County Supervisor Sylvia
Ortiz-Velez and Milwaukee County Parks
officials to discuss the Milwaukee County hemp resolution - soon to
be passed, and the next steps that will follow. The resolution,
introduced by Supervisor Ortiz-Velez in early September, will
authorize the Country Parks Department to conduct a study on the
viability and revenue-generating potential of the Milwaukee County
growing industrial hemp. The study would be for research purposes,
but could also potentially develop into a grow education resource
center.
Senator Taylor is excited at
the possibility of having Milwaukee County tap into an additional
revenue stream that is the hemp production and processing industry.
This resolution will assist to bring economic and agricultural
advances to the Milwaukee area, as well as health and research
benefits.

Intern
Spotlight: Sarah Pfeiffer
This week’s spotlight is on Sarah Pfeiffer, a
policy intern. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Sarah is a senior
graduating in the spring of 2019 with a degree in Education Policy. She
hopes to gain practical skills and experience for the future during
this internship, and thinks it will help her decide what her role
should be in the public service realm.
Sarah has an appreciation for Senator Taylor’s
passion for education and has enjoyed sitting in on committee meetings
during her time in the office.
When she has free time, Sarah plays lacrosse, is involved in Greek life
and is a member of the “We’re Better Than That – Men against sexual
assault” organization on campus. Sarah will be continuing her love for
education after graduation by teaching at Success Academy in New York
City starting in August! She will be greatly missed, but we are happy
to see her continue to follow her passion in teaching and we wish her
luck in all her future endeavors!
