Enough is enough from the Milwaukee Police & Fire Commission

(MILWAUKEE) Senator Lena C. Taylor (D-Milwaukee), co-chair of the Joint Committee on Finance, has today released the following statement:

“The most important service the Milwaukee Police and Fire Commission should provide our community is preventing disciplinary proceedings from ever being necessary through proper oversight and training. Clearly this is not happening.

Rather than being an exception, the Commission’s recent reinstatement of a police officer who punched a restrained woman in the face is the latest questionable act in the Board’s history of disrespect, disregard, and dehumanization of the public that first responders take an oath to protect.

With two vacant Commission seats, there is an opportunity to make sure that the community’s voice is not only heard, but that our interests are actually respected and represented.

For now, all I can express is a great disappointment for the culture of disrespect and degradation that the Commission not only allows to exist, but actively watches grow at alarmingly horrific rates. Enough is enough.

My office will revisit the Fire and Police Commission Restructuring Bill of 2007, in collaboration with Milwaukee city officials and the Unity Caucus.”

The community is encouraged to attend the public hearing listed below, where we will collect citizen: experiences, input regarding the filling of the vacant commission seats, and input regarding the board's structure or elimination.
