Senator Taylor Responds to Senator Grothman on Affirmative Action

MADISON – Today, State Senator Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) issued a statement opposing State Senator Glenn Grothman’s (R-West Bend) calls for a special legislative session to debate a constitutional amendment on affirmative action.

“Senator Grothman missed the mark on this one,” Taylor said. “Affirmative action isn’t a constitutional issue; it’s a legislative one.  Time and again, legislative committees and subcommittees, including one chaired by Senator Grothman, have taken it up without ever achieving passage.  With our state facing record job losses and rising consumer costs, there are more pressing issues to deal with in a special session.”

“Wisconsin has spent years building the capacity for minority firms to operate,” she continued. “Projects like the Marquette Interchange, which just came in ahead of schedule and under budget, have made our state a national leader in economic diversity.  This isn’t the time to abandon that commitment to diversity.  It’s not the time for us to go backwards.”
