Madison – Today State Sen. Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement regarding residential property taxes.

“As Governor Walker tours the state touting property tax relief, I would like to remind him of the outrageous property tax burden imposed by the state on City of Milwaukee property taxpayers due to the ‘funding flaw’ that exists with the school choice program. This flaw forces property taxpayers to pay $54 million more than if the choice program did not exist. This ‘funding flaw’ sticks it to Milwaukee property taxpayers, with the City estimating that the average taxpayer pays about $230 more per year.

“In the neighborhoods I represent, $230 would offer real relief to help pay for groceries, utility bills, or mortgage payments. If Governor Walker was serious about property tax relief, his first priority would be to fix this funding flaw.”
