Public Meeting Tomorrow

Port Milwaukee and the City of Milwaukee's Department of City Development join community stakeholders in announcing an upcoming meeting about the forthcoming clean-up of Milwaukee’s rivers and inner harbor.

Funded through a collaboration of the city, county, state, regional and federal governments, along with private sponsors, The Milwaukee Estuary Clean-up is a $400 million project focused on removing underwater sediments polluted with mercury, PCBs, and other contaminants from former Milwaukee industries going back to the 1800s.

Contaminated material will be dredged and properly disposed of. The project will take approximately six years to complete, and will include the harbor, and parts of the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic rivers. This cleanup project has been described as a “once in a lifetime opportunity” which will protect local natural resources and improve quality of life for all of us.

A virtual public meeting will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, May 18, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm to discuss a new Dredged Material Management Facility on the shores of Lake Michigan, which will manage sediment that is removed from the Milwaukee Estuary as part of the clean-up.
