Happy Thanksgiving!

From its colonial inception, through the creation of a national holiday during the Civil War, to the first Thanksgiving football game, this timeline of Thanksgiving history will make you wonder how the Thanksgiving celebrations of today might factor into the history of this quintessentially American holiday.

Medical Professionals Ask for Help to Stop the Spread

Over the weekend, thousands of medical professionals from UW Health penned An Open Letter to the People of Wisconsin in which they asked their fellow Wisconsinites to adopt the frequently recommended practices that our medical community has identified as the most effective at stopping the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the disease COVID-19.

They urged Wisconsinites to:

  • Avoid gatherings that put you at risk, not just with strangers but extended family members, too.
  • Wear a mask. They really do work, and they save lives, including your own.
  • Wash your hands, often.

They stressed that until the distribution of vaccines, they need our help to contain the spread of the virus.

A similar letter was released on behalf of the American Hospital Association, American Medical Association, and the American Nurses Association, addressed to the American public nationwide.

Plasma Donations are Needed from COVID Survivors

The growth in cases of COVID-19 has put medical facilities in dire need of COVID Convalescent Plasma (CCP), which is used by hospitals to treat severe COVID cases.

This lifesaving resource can only be collected from people who have COVID antibodies from a previous infection, and Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin is shipping out supplies three times faster than they can collect it.

Versiti is requesting the participation of COVID survivors to help fight the disease by donating CCP. Through a donation, you have the power to help someone in our community – a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or friend – get the therapy they need to beat the virus like you did.

Governor Evers Directs another $80 Million to Support Skilled Nursing Facilities

Last week, Governor Tony Evers set aside an additional $80 million specifically for Wisconsin's skilled nursing facilities to address critical staffing shortages through the end of the year.

Supporting the state's long-term care workforce is integral to Wisconsin's COVID-19 response, as these settings provide care for the most vulnerable members of our state.

Recently, we learned that central Wisconsin hospitals are currently on pace to run out of beds by mid-December. It is absolutely necessary that the Legislature return from its 220+ day hiatus to work with the Governor to develop a strategy and supply resources to our healthcare workforce as soon as possible.

Tips to Avoid Vaccine Trial Imposter Scams

There are currently multiple vaccine research trials recruiting participants to help in the production of a COVID-19 vaccine. Unfortunately, there are also scammers posing as researchers in an attempt to get money or personal information from good-natured Wisconsinites.

To avoid scams like this, make sure that you verify the research study. It should be possible to find news stories related to legitimate trials in your area. Do not click on links in emails, messages, or advertisements inviting you to participate. Instead, use verified websites from the study host.

Understand what personal information the study may need. Volunteers will likely need info like your name, phone number, email, address, age, gender, race, ethnicity, and medical history. But legitimate studies should not need information such as your Social Security Number or any financial information.

Never pay to participate. While it is normal for trials to pay you for your participation, legitimate trials will not ask for payment or credit card information. If a trial is offering you compensation, ask that it be issued in the form of a check rather than a direct deposit.

Unique Maps Show What's in Milwaukee's Harbor

Maps showing what lies beneath the surface of Milwaukee's harbor are now available online after four years in the making.

Researchers from UW-Milwaukee created the maps as a tool to monitor the health of the harbor and as a model to improve the health of other urban harbors.

“Having this tool also helps us understand the impact that our lives have had on life under the water,” Said Kim Beckmann, a UWM associate professor who worked to develop the maps. “The environment that we accidentally create or the one we harm or restore, all of that impacts what the fish do.”
