Madison – Today State Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee), in anticipation of the upcoming release of the Department of Transportation’s budget, called for the legislature to vote on the DOT budget separate from the general state budget.
Carpenter noted that in the past, under Governor Tommy Thompson, Wisconsin had passed transportation items as a separate bill, instead of including it in the biennial state budget.
“Legislators should have a better opportunity to weigh in on what projects receive priority, and where costs can be cut,” said Carpenter.
“In the Third Senate District, hundreds of millions of dollars were saved by abandoning the DOT’s proposed ‘double-deck’ option on the I-94 in Milwaukee. More could be saved by not increasing the footprint of I-94 from South 78th street to Miller Park in Milwaukee,” said Carpenter.
