Madison – Today State Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) expressed his gratitude and excitement to hear that the United States Department of Veterans Affairs has acted to approve plans to rehabilitate and restore six of the Milwaukee Soldiers Home District's unused buildings for their original purpose - the service of veterans.
Senator Carpenter is honored to be on the Milwaukee VA Soldiers Home Advisory Council.
“Almost exactly a year ago, as the ranking member of the Senate Veteran’s Committee, I added my voice to encourage the United State Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Robert McDonald, to expedite the approval of long-term leases to allow the rehabilitation plans to move forward at the Milwaukee Soldiers Home buildings to give them new life, and to rededicate their use to their original, best, and necessary purpose: to serve our veterans. I am grateful the VA given the green light to move forward,” said Carpenter.
“These rehabilitated buildings will provide low cost housing for returning vets, helping to alleviate the problem of veteran homelessness. Their proximity to the VA hospital gives them an ideal location. I believe that projects such as this allow us to fulfill our commitment to our veterans. It is a commitment that extends past a soldiers service. It is a commitment to ensure that all returning soldiers have the opportunity to succeed and thrive,” said Carpenter.
The Milwaukee Soldiers Home District is located in Sen. Carpenter’s senate district, and is recognized as a National Treasure by the National Trust for History Preservation.
