Plan to Move Green Bay Coal Piles Moves Closer to Reality

MADISON– Senator Robert Cowles (R-Green Bay) released the following statement after the Assembly passed 2019 Assembly Bill 325 with a vote of 69-27 that provides the City of Green Bay with $1.2 million from the Harbor Assistance Program for detailed engineering and environmental work at the WPS Pulliam Plant Site that will pave the way to the eventual relocation of the C. Reiss Coal piles and development of an intermodal port freight facility that serves Northeast Wisconsin.

“I look forward to working with Senate Leaders to bring this bill before the Senate for a vote and for the Governor to sign it into law. While the greater Green Bay area has used much of its waterfront as an asset to the region, one key eyesore remains; the coal piles. The announcement of the Pulliam Power Plant closing presents a unique opportunity to move the coal piles from an important city-center parcel to the mouth of the Fox River. The added benefit of establishing a new intermodal port at Pulliam site would be a major asset to Green Bay and all off Northeast Wisconsin. The passage of this legislation through the Assembly to utilize funding from the Harbor Assistance Program to establish a suitable port in the new parcel and assist with the eventual drawdown of the coal piles on the banks of the Fox River moves one step closer to reality.”
