Sen. Cowles Response to the Budget Address

MADISON– Senator Robert Cowles (R-Green Bay) released the following statement in response to tonight’s Budget Address by Governor Tony Evers:

“Tonight’s Budget Address leaves me with a lot of questions. While I could see myself supporting some of the items the Governor laid out tonight, I am extremely concerned about the price tag of this proposed budget. Instead of finding effective funding solutions, the Governor appears to be approaching problems by just throwing money at them with questionable accountability that clearly leaves taxpayers with the check.

“I am also disappointed to see an incredible amount of non-fiscal policy items packed into the Governor’s budget. I have long believed that policy items, regardless of which party put them in the budget, belong as standalone bills in the committee process where they can be evaluated on their own merits. Instead, Governor Evers tries to pull a fast one and puts a bunch of partisan policy in an omnibus bill. I will be taking a very close look at this budget and I’ll be interested to see what is in this budget that we don’t know about yet.

“I plan to ensure that the priorities for Northeast Wisconsin residents will be addressed and that if I vote for the final budget, it will keep our state’s economic standing strong and continue to move our state forward.”
