A Day to Pay Homage
With sunny skies and temperatures rising, Wisconsinites are looking forward to Memorial Day weekend. Not only is it the ceremonious kickoff of summer, but it’s an opportunity for us to enjoy a long-weekend of recreating and relaxing with friends and family. Whether you have plans to devour brats and potato salad at a cookout, break out the jersey and take in a ball game, or grab the fishing poles and head to the lake, we must not forget the true meaning of this weekend.
Memorial Day has roots dating back to 1868, with community members decorating fallen soldiers graves with flowers to commemorate their sacrifice. It wasn’t until 1971 that Congress declared Memorial Day an official federal holiday, electing that this day holds such importance that we must be unified in celebration. Today, almost every city, village, and town throughout the United States has their own way of commemorating local military heroes who lost their lives.
“Every man and woman who has taken time to serve our country deserves our deepest gratitude,” said Senator Robert Cowles (R-Green Bay), “but those who made the ultimate sacrifice hold an honor that is unmatched. No matter how you choose to celebrate your Memorial Day weekend, please take a moment to remember those brave souls who perished to ensure our freedom.”
As you enjoy your Memorial Day weekend, consider taking a moment to honor fallen soldiers by visiting a veteran’s monument. Listed below are veteran’s monuments around Wisconsin’s 2nd Senate District, which covers portions of Brown, Outagamie, Shawano, and Waupaca Counties:
