Wisconsin Cited for Abundance in Unfilled Jobs

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says there is a record level of job postings in the U.S. with 5.8 million job openings at the end of July. Wisconsin is one of several states with an abundance of unfilled jobs. Today the Job Center of Wisconsin had more than 86,000 job listings. A large number of those high demand positions are for IT professionals, health care professionals, skilled workers and welders. We have addressed the so-called skills gap in the past, but obviously, more needs to be done.

In the past month, the Speaker's Task Force on Youth Workforce Readiness was created to explore new ways to encourage Wisconsin youth to pursue careers in the trades, manufacturing industry and technical fields. The task force will also examine future industry needs and challenges in Wisconsin. Task force members will be attending hearings around the state to gather input from job creators and the public.

Tomahawk Business Tours

This week I was able to visit several businesses in Tomahawk including Northland Stainless, Golden Living Centers nursing home, and Kinship of Tomahawk.

Pictured Above: Bill Wenzel, General Manager of Northland Stainless and I, walking through the factory.

Pictured Above: Patti Hilgendorf, Executive Director of Kinship, Robyn Gruner of AT&T, myself and several kids involved in the Kinship program.

I had a wonderful time touring these are businesses and I want to thank each of them for taking the time to share their work with me and allow me to see firsthand the positive effect they are having on our local economy and community.

Loss of a War Hero

On September 9th, Tomahawk lost one of its finest citizens with the death of Einar H. Ingman, Jr. who passed away surrounded by his family at Sacred Heart Hospital in Tomahawk.

Einar H. Ingman, Jr. was one of five Medal of Honor recipients from Wisconsin for his service in Korea. The four others were awarded posthumously. Ingman received the Medal of Honor from President Harry Truman on July 5, 1951 and was also the recipient of two Purple Hearts, the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars.

Afterwards, Ingman came home to Tomahawk, greeted by a crowd of 20,000 people at a “Welcome Home Parade and Celebration.” His hometown presented him with a new car, boat, motor and trailer.

Exactly one year after receiving the Medal of Honor, he married the love of his life, Mardelle Goodfellow. In November 1952, he was discharged from the Army as retired. He went on to work as a mail clerk with then-Owens-Illinois Paper Corp. in Tomahawk, retiring after 32 years.

The Funeral Service for Einar H. Ingman Jr., will take place at 11:00AM on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at Grace Lutheran Church, Tomahawk.
