Armed Forces Day
Armed Forces Day was created in 1949 after President Truman had the idea to create a single holiday to thank the military members for their service to the country. Previous to this there were separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force Days. However, upon unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense, on August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Johnson announced that Armed Forces Day would replace these individual remembrance days.
