Legislative Session Wraps Up
Last night,
the Wisconsin State Assembly officially adjourned our legislative session
for the year. The final session day included several key pieces of
legislation. One of the bills that received the most attention was
SB 300,
to address cost differences between intravenous and oral chemotherapy
treatments. The bill was passed by a wide bipartisan margin in the Assembly,
by a vote of 75-18. I was proud to vote in favor of the bill.
SB 300 will
implement a cost containment measure on oral chemotherapy medications,
making it easier for families and individuals suffering from cancer to
afford the drug. Oral chemotherapy is not suitable for every type of cancer
or every patient, but in some cases can provide very meaningful relief and
better ease of treatment. SB 300 was amended by the Assembly to include a
cap on out-of-pocket expenses to no more than $100 a month. This
change was supported by cancer advocacy groups in Wisconsin, and follows
recent patterns in other states such as Missouri and California.
The bill will
head for final approval by the state Senate, and Governor Walker has
indicated he will sign the measure. Once enacted, Wisconsin will join 28
other states and the District of Columbia in limiting the patient cost of
oral chemotherapy.
Governor Signs Snowmobile
Legislation

This week
Wednesday, March 19th the Governor signed into law Assembly Bill 407,
legislation I authored to provide additional funding for Wisconsin’s
Snowmobile Program. It was an incredible honor to see him sign the bill, and
one of the most gratifying moments for me so far in the state legislature.
This bill was truly a team effort. Hundreds of trail volunteers from around
the state dedicated their time and effort to educating fellow riders and
community members about the need for stable trail funding. Club leaders and
county trail supervisors were instrumental in finding a workable compromise
for all involved. My Senate co-author, Senator Rick Gudex from Fond du Lac,
did a terrific job marshaling support in the state Senate where the bill
passed overwhelmingly 30-1. AB 407 is now known as
2013 WI Act 142, and will take effect July 1, 2015.
Sincere Thanks for Your Support
Many of you are aware that I was
recently
diagnosed with a reoccurrence of breast cancer. My spirit is strong, and
I am thankful for the wonderful support of my son Logan and daughter Ashley,
along with so many other family and friends. My treatment plan is
underway, and I plan to emerge stronger than ever. I will still be keeping
to all my commitments and official duties – I may just be a step slower when
you see me. My treatment outlook calls for my treatments to be completed
this summer.
Since the news first became public, I have
received hundreds of emails, calls, cards, and thoughtful words. Your
support sustains me and is sincerely appreciated. With the legislative
session concluded, you will see me attending even more local events all over
the district. Please take a moment to say hello, and again, thank you!
P.S. - Take a moment to remind your family
members and loved ones - be vigilant about your health!
Take the time to make the extra phone call, and don't put off annual doctor
visits. Awareness really does save lives.
