Raptor Education Group Inc
Last week, I was able to tour the Raptor Education Group Inc
located in Antigo, WI. The Raptor Education Group Inc is run by
Marge and Don Gibson, who both serve as Executive Directors of
the organization.
Since 1990, Raptor
Education Group Inc has worked to increase public awareness and
promote public education programs to support field research.
Most importantly, however, they work towards the rehabilitation
of injured avian species and over the years have treated
thousands of birds.
Raptor Education Group, Inc
is a completely non-profit organization that is run through
volunteer work and donations.

I am glad to have been able
to see the hard work of this organization first-hand and I would
like to specially thank Marge for taking the time to show me the
wonderful working being done to protect and treat our states
birds.
UW-Milwaukee
Innovation Accelerator and
Freshwater Sciences
This week I had the privilege of visiting the Innovation
Accelerator and Freshwater Science
campuses at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
The Innovation Accelerator center is a public and private
partnership between private industries and advanced education
system designed to bring students together with the private
sector to increase the development of innovative products and
technologies.
The School of Freshwater Science is the first graduate school in
the nation dedicated solely to the study of freshwater and one
of only three such schools in the world. Its areas of focus are
fish farming, disease prevention in freshwater wildlife, and
ensuring the health and sustainability of the Great Lakes.
I
would like to dedicate a special thank you to UW-Milwaukee Vice
Chancellor Tom Luljak for guiding me through these important
education facilities.

Merrill Fire
Department ranked in top 2% nationwide
Last week, the Insurance
Service Office posted the rankings for fire departments
nationwide and ranked the Merrill Fire Department in the top 2%
nationally. This is the highest the department has been ranked
in its 127 years of service.
Mike Drury, a long time
employee of the station attributes several training improvements
to the boost in ranking. Drury says that the department has
stepped up its training and that the technology on the vehicles
used by the Fire Department are a night and day difference
compared to when he first started.
Officials also say improvements to the city's water system and
the county's dispatch center helped boost the ranking.
Congratulations to the
Merrill Fire Department.
Wisconsin Job Numbers
Hold Steady
The U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics has released its new job numbers and Wisconsin
continues to hold steady. The state unemployment rate continues to be at
4.6 percent in July, which is well under the national rate
of 5.3 percent.
The Department of Workforce Development says
that
Wisconsin has added 8,200 private-sector jobs last month. Officials
say this growth is fueled by high-demand sectors such as
manufacturing.
In addition, unemployment insurance claims for
the year are at the lowest point since 1990. I am happy to see
that our economy continues to expand and move forward and that
more hard-working Wisconsinites are once again back to work. It is just one of many indicators that Wisconsin is
headed in the right direction and our reforms are working for
our state.
Have a good weekend and
enjoy the sunshine!
