The preliminary job creation numbers for the month of June are in, and the message is clear: Wisconsin is creating jobs again. The Department of Workforce Development announced that Wisconsin gained 12,900 new private-sector jobs in June, the highest monthly total since 2003, and had a net of 9,500 new jobs for the month. That number was more than half of the entire nation’s 18,000 net new jobs created over the same time period.
Since January, our new Governor and new legislative majorities have focused on creating a positive economic climate so that job creators in our state and throughout the nation will again see Wisconsin as a place to expand their businesses and bring family supporting jobs. Wisconsin has been a national leader in enacting policies to help job creators grow, and employers have taken notice. From lawsuit reforms to regulatory reforms, and of course balancing a $3.6 billion deficit while holding the line on taxes, our state is truly moving in the right direction. It is good to see those efforts translating to real jobs.
Yet, we cannot rest. We must continue to rein in spending, lower taxes, and ease overly burdensome regulations in our state. Our national economy is certainly not seeing the growth we need and much more needs to be done. As the legislative session moves forward, I look forward to continuing these efforts to get government out of the way so that job creators can get Wisconsin working again.
