Damage to WI’s Business Climate Won’t be Fixed Quickly

Last week, several Wisconsin employers joined the ranks of businesses that are leaving or reducing their presence in Wisconsin. Georgia-Pacific announced that it will lay off 158 people at its Green Bay plant. Owens Inc closed both of its Shawano plants last Thursday, leaving 150 people unemployed.

This year has been a challenging one for the state’s job climate. As businesses were struggling to make ends meet in a failing economy, Wisconsin Democrats proceeded to hit them with $5 billion in tax and fee increases and burdensome business regulations early in 2009. Most of these changes were enacted with no regard for the negative consequences that they would have on the state’s economy.

Now that the damage is done, Wisconsin Democrats have unveiled a number of “business friendly” plans to grow jobs in Wisconsin. While we need to focus on keeping and retaining jobs in the state, it is laughable to see this sudden concern about Wisconsin’s job climate when Democrats showed no concern for it when passing their job-killing measures just six months ago.

Veterans Call for Repair
of Trust Fund

Madison… Senator Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) and Representative Kevin Petersen (R-Waupaca) introduced legislation that would prolong the solvency of the Veterans Trust Fund (VTF). The VTF was created in 1961 and is used to finance veteran’s mortgage loans, the assistance to needy veterans program, and numerous other veteran assistance related programs and services.

“The veterans trust fund has provided essential services to our heroes for decades,” Fitzgerald said. “It is our solemn duty to our veterans to keep this fund in good standing.”
