DEMOCTATS INCREASE TUITION
BURDEN ON UW STUDENTS
Students starting the fall semester at a University of Wisconsin system school are facing increased tuition rates thanks to raids approved by Wisconsin Democrats this summer in the 2009-2011 state budget bill. Democrats supported a $23.3 million raid of student segregated fees in the legislation and diverted the revenue to other programs. The action made it more difficult for the UW system to balance its budget and contributed to the need to raise student tuition this school year.
The UW System's auxiliary enterprise fund includes money collected from student housing, parking, bookstores, student health services, student unions, intercollegiate athletics, and a variety of other services. These programs are self-supporting through the collection of student segregated fees and the sale of goods and services. Wisconsin Democrats took $23.3 million from the fund in a quick cash grab to help balance the state budget.
