A Note from Rep.

Bills That Passed this Week
We spent Tuesday
afternoon in session passing a number of bills. Below I explain two specific
bills that I think will move Wisconsin forward.
Increase of Speed Limit: This bill
Wisconsin Department of Transportation the authority to raise the speed
limit in Wisconsin to 70 miles per hour on roads that the department deems
safe to travel at those speeds. Currently, Wisconsin is only one of three
states that has a speed limit of 65 miles an hour. Studies have shown that
this measure will not increase the overall speed at which we travel and will
lead to less accidents on highways.
Remedial Class
Reporting: Currently, 1 in 5 students
that attend a University of Wisconsin School have to take remedial classes
in mathematics or English. This bill will require that UW schools report the
number of students that have to take remedial courses and which high schools
they attended. Eventually, this will lead to changes that will lower the
amount of remedial courses that waste money, time and valuable resources.
Wisconsin Basketball!
NEW Lutheran:
The Men's Basketball Team for NEW Lutheran made it to the quarterfinals of
the Division 5 WIAA State Basketball Tournament. After a successful season,
the Blazers lost a hard fought battle to Hillsboro at the Kohl Center on
Thursday.
UWGB Women
Basketball:
Our Lady Phoenix take on Princeton tomorrow afternoon. Although they are a 9
seed, I
believe that Green Bay will make it deep in the NCAA Women's Basketball
tournament!
Wisconsin Men
Basketball:
The Badgers are poised for an amazing run this March. I filled out my
bracket, and I'm excited to see how far they go.
Poison Prevention Week
It's Poison Prevention Week. Follow
these simple steps to avoid dangerous situations with various household
poisons:
Protect your family
against carbon monoxide. Install a carbon monoxide detector
near the bedroom
area of your home and have your heating system inspected every fall.
Store chemicals and
medications in their original containers. Original containers for these
products contain information that may be needed in a poisoning. In addition,
medicines and chemicals that have been transferred to an unlabeled container
may be difficult to identify. Use of food containers like drinking glasses,
cups or soda cans to store pesticide solutions, cleaning compounds, or
solvents can result in an accidental poisoning.
Read and follow product labels. Learn to use label information to select
products that are safe for your home and the environment. If you have
questions about the use and disposal of a product, call the manufacturer.
When buying chemicals, buy only as much as you need for the job you plan to
do. Although buying a larger quantity may save you a few dollars, storing
left over toxic chemicals in your home is not a good idea.
Never mix household chemicals that contain chlorine bleach with products
that contain acids or ammonia. These chemicals can combine to form deadly
chlorine gas.
Use the Wisconsin Poison Center as a resource.
Post their number near each telephone in your home. Call the Poison Center
if you have questions about a toxic substance or possible poisoning
(1-800-222-1222), anywhere in
Wisconsin.
