Photo ID
Assembly Bill 7, commonly known as the
Photo ID bill will be brought before the Assembly in the next couple
of weeks. I believe the Photo ID legislation is necessary in
Wisconsin. The state
Department of Justice and Milwaukee County district attorney's
office have prosecuted 20 cases of voter fraud from the November
2008 election. One case of fraud is
one case too many in my opinion.
In
a day and age when we can’t even go to the video store to rent a
movie without presenting ID, asking to present ID at your local
polling place is not too much to ask.
Now remember this bill is in its infancy
and will be going through committees.
The Assembly committee agreed
to allow IDs issued by accredited public and private universities
and colleges in Wisconsin if they included a photo, signature,
current address and date of birth. The IDs could be used only if
they expired within four years of the election.
In addition
to certain student IDs, also eligible for voting purposes would be
Wisconsin driver's licenses, state-issued ID cards, military IDs,
passports, naturalization certificates or IDs issued by Native
American tribes based in Wisconsin. The state Department of
Transportation would provide free IDs - but not driver's licenses -
to those who asked for them, a provision included in the bill to
ensure the ID requirement did not amount to an unconstitutional poll
tax.

Constitutional/Conceal Carry Gun bills
My
office has been receiving a lot of correspondence regarding
legislation for constitutional/concealed carry. Throughout my short
time in the legislature, I have valued the opinions and concerns of
the people in the 72nd District.
A
little background on this legislation is in the United States of
America, only 2 states (Illinois and Wisconsin) and the District of
Columbia do not provide their citizens the ability to carry
concealed weapons.
It
has been statistically demonstrated that crime goes down in a
correlation with an increase in the ability and actual number of
citizens who can and do carry concealed weapons.
Two forms of legislation providing a RIGHT TO CARRY to
enable Wisconsin citizens to carry concealed weapons.
I
am reading both to bills to ascertain which is best, in theory I do
believe in constitutional carry.
