JOBS TAX CREDIT EXPANSION

Yesterday, Assembly Bill 1, which expands the state’s existing Jobs Tax Credit program passed in the State Assembly with a bipartisan vote of 95-2. This program has been extremely successful in Wisconsin and effective for job creation and economic development. Currently, the state has already come close to issuing the maximum amount of credits that can be issued per year. Under this bill, the $5 million annual cap on Jobs Tax Credits is increased to $10 million.

This program has been a strong tool for economic development that does not favor one industry over another. Employers are able to receive a 10% refundable tax credit on wages paid and eligible training expenditures. The tax credit can be used by job creators to pay higher wages, hire additional employees, invest in new equipment, expand research and development, reduce debt load, or direct it to where there is the most need.

APPLICATIONS FOR NATIONAL CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT PROGRAM

Each year hand crafted ornaments are made to hang on the 56 trees in Washington D.C. that represent every territory, U.S. state, and the District of Columbia. These trees are placed around the National Christmas Tree.

Yesterday, the Governor’s office outlined how an art teacher or artist can team up with youth who may be in an art class, after school program, or children’s hospital to design ornaments that will be used to decorate Wisconsin’s national Christmas tree in Washington D.C.

Every state is allowed to have 24 ornaments. The Governor’s office will randomly select the artist and youth group. The globes used to make the ornaments are provided by the National Park Foundation and can be viewed at this website: http://www.darice.com/ecom/productdetails.aspx?it=1105-89&oid=5898 .

If you are an artist or art teacher interested in pairing with youth to design an ornament, please email govpress@wisconsin.gov with the name of the art teacher or artist and a brief description of the youth that will be worked with to make the ornament. Please also include the approximate age and location of the youth. Submissions will be accepted until noon on October 25th. Decorated ornaments using the globes provided by the National Park Foundation should be returned no later than November 18th.
