HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF UPTOWN

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Please join me at an important Public Input Session tomorrow on the future of the Uptown neighborhood.  The Public Input Session will be held on Thursday, January 23rd, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the Salvation Army, 1901 Washington Avenue, Racine.  I encourage you to attend this meeting to share your thoughts on the best ways to revitalize one of our community's most vibrant areas, and to learn from the ideas your neighbors have as well. Food and drinks will be provided at the Public Input Session, which is being co-hosted by the City of Racine, Explore Uptown, the Racine County Economic Development Corporation, and Vandewalle and Associates.

THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING

I was very happy to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King at the George Bray Neighborhood Center on Monday. The wonderful event featured soul food, African dance, and the unveiling of a mural in honor of Racine civil rights activist Maria Morales. The event was co-hosted by Youth Empowered in The Struggle, Voces de la Frontera, the Racine Branch of the NAACP, and the Racine Education Association.

In addition to Dr. King's struggle for racial equality, I hope we also remember Dr. King's vision of a world where everyone can have the opportunity to enjoy the dignity of work. As Dr. King once said, "What does it profit a man to be able to eat at an integrated lunch counter if he doesn't have enough money to buy a hamburger?" That is why I am pleased to have recently introduced Wisconsin's Fair Minimum Wage Act, which would gradually raise Wisconsin's minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. This bill already has forty-six co-sponsors, and you can read more about it on my website. Dr. King dreamt of a society where people were judged on "the content of their character, not the color of their skin;" and also stated "God intends for all his children to have the basic necessities of life, and he has left in the universe 'enough to spare' for this purpose."

                THE CIVIL RIGHTS RESTORATION BILL

As we continue to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King, I can think of no more appropriate time of year to reintroduce my Civil Rights Restoration Bill. Currently, federal civil rights laws such as the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and the Family Medical Leave Act do not apply to state and university employees unless state law specifies that they do. My bill would waive Wisconsin's "sovereign immunity" and restore these important civil rights protections to every Wisconsinite in the workplace. Illinois and Minnesota have already passed similar legislation. I'm proud to be supported in this effort by AARP Wisconsin, AFSCME Council 24, Disability Rights Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired.  You can find out more here,
