A Visit from the DNR Secretary Department of Natural Resources Secretary Cathy Stepp accepted my recent invitation to visit our area and tour several of our local parks to discuss potential improvement projects. First, I met with the Secretary and local officials to discuss extending the network of trails at Silver Lake Park in Silver Lake. The proposed project would extend the trails into a loop around the lake, and connect Silver Lake Park to Fox River Park. Also, we discussed the possible expansion of KD park in Twin Lakes. A Stewardship Grant may be available to purchase an adjoining piece of land that would increase the size of the park by 99 acres. The visit was productive and enjoyable. I look forward to monitoring these projects as they advance.
Enjoy the Summertime with Family and Friends I hope all of you are enjoying the summertime with family and friends. Despite the demands of a busy schedule, my family and I have been able to enjoy the summer holidays and spend some quality time together at fun summertime activities and events.
Whitetail Deer Report Released A report has been released that assesses current policies on managing the whitetail deer population in Wisconsin. Last fall, Governor Walker signed an executive order that created the Whitetail Deer Trustee position to assess current policies regarding the state's whitetail deer herd and to make recommendations. The Department of Natural Resources will review the report to help determine the best steps to take in future management of the deer population. For more information on the report, click here and select a Deer Report link on the left side of the screen. Drought Resources As you know, our state is experiencing a serious drought and extended periods of high temperatures this summer. This abnormal weather pattern has been difficult for many Wisconsinites. Governor Walker recently declared a state of emergency due to the state's lack of rain. Both the Department of Natural Resources and UW Extension have posted information about how to cope with these conditions. Find the DNR page here and the UW Extension page here. Both pages provide a wealth of information on coping with heat and drought, from tips to conserve water, to burning guidelines, to tips for when you are outdoors in the heat.
