66th Assembly District Update - Jan. 16, 2009, Vol. 4

NEW “511” SYSTEM ALERTS DRIVERS ON THE CONDITIONS OF STATE ROADS

In response to the hazardous winter weather in recent years, a new state program was recently launched to provide up-to-date information on road conditions for Wisconsin drivers.  They simply dial 511.  The system, which is run by the Department of Transportation, provides information about road conditions in every county throughout the state.  The number is toll free, although normal cell phone airtime charges still apply.

“We’ve already had our share of rough winter driving conditions,” said Rep. Kerkman.  “The new ‘511’ system should serve as an important tool for residents travelling throughout the state.  It should help them with planning how much time they will need to reach their destinations based on the condition of the roads," said Rep. Kerkman.

The DOT has experienced minor glitches with the program, particularly with the voice recognition system which has had trouble with similar sounding counties such as Sauk and Rock.  Also, some cell phone carriers may not offer access to 511.  (Subscribers should check with their carrier to be sure.)  Those callers can use the alternate 866-511-WISC (9472) number.

Both Minnesota and Iowa also have 511 services.  Upon request, callers can be linked to Minnesota or Iowa’s systems.  Illinois does not currently have a 511 system.

“I am hopeful the 511 system will make driving safer for state residents,” Rep. Kerkman said.  "Too often, drivers tend to be in a hurry to reach their destinations, despite bad road conditions.  If they know in advance they will need more time for driving, we'll hopefully see fewer slide-offs and accidents," said Rep. Kerkman.  She urges people not to call the number if it means taking their attention or eyes off the road.
