Submit a Design for the 2014 State Park Sticker

Did you know that the Wisconsin state park and forest vehicle admission sticker is designed by a high school student? Every year, the DNR holds a design contest to select the next year's sticker art. The contest is open to all high school age students attending school in Wisconsin. Students wishing to submit an entry for the 2014 sticker contest may do so through April 17, 2013. For more information, visit the DNR website.

The 2013 sticker (right) is now available for purchase and provides access to more that 60 state park, forest, and recreation area properties across the state. The sticker is required for all vehicles to park in these areas and the cost is $25 for Wisconsin residents. The 2013 winner was Holly Jo Cegielski, a sophomore at Waukesha South High School.

Wisconsin Budget Process Begins

Earlier this week, Governor Scott Walker addressed the Legislature with his proposal for the state budget that will determine our state's spending for the next two years. The Governor has put forth some exciting ideas, including an income tax cut for the middle class, an expansion of the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program, as well as increased investments in education, transportation, and veterans initiatives. The Joint Finance Committee of the Legislature will now begin reviewing and debating the proposal, which must be approved by both the Assembly and the Senate to become law. See the chart at left for a great visual depiction of the budget process, courtesy of the Legislative Fiscal Bureau.  For more detailed information about the content of the Governor's proposed budget, check out the budget in brief. Also, Speaker Vos provides a brief video explanation here.

Child Welfare Legislation Moves Forward

As you may remember, last year I was asked to serve as Chair of the Special Committee on Permanency for Young Children in the Child Welfare System. This special study committee was created by the Joint Legislative Council and its task was to study current law relating to permanency for children in the child welfare system and to make policy recommendations. Over the course of six intensive meetings, the Committee heard testimony from many different stakeholders about how to make child welfare better for kids. We drafted and debated many bills, some of which were combined into three final drafts which were approved by the members of the Committee. Last week, the Joint Legislative Council voted to introduce the bills for consideration by the Legislature. I am working with my colleagues at the Capitol to gain support for this important legislation, in hopes that it passes to become law. I want to extend special thanks to Ron Rogers and Robin Neeson from Kenosha County who were valuable members of the Special Committee throughout this process.
