61st Assembly District Update -  January 8, 2013;  Vol. 1, Edition 85

Rep. Kerkman signs the oath of office book after being sworn in for her seventh term in the State Assembly

The 101st Legislative Session Has Begun

After yesterday's Inauguration of the members of the State Assembly and Senate, the 2013-2014 Wisconsin Legislative Session has officially begun. I look forward to beginning work to move our state in the right direction toward economic growth. I'm honored to represent the new 61st Assembly District. This session, I will continue to serve as Assembly co-chair of the Joint Audit Committee. I will serve as Vice-Chair of the Ways and Means Committee, which handles tax legislation that is not part of the state budget. I will also serve on the Judiciary Committee and the Children and Families Committee.

Focus on Mining and Job Creation

Now that the new session is underway, the Assembly will focus on improving Wisconsin's climate for job creation. Rep. Robin Vos, the new Speaker of the Assembly, is leading the effort, having announced that the first bill to be introduced will be legislation to reform the outdated mining laws in Wisconsin. Studies done by North Star Economics find that more than 2,800 total long-term jobs would be generated from a new mining operation with 700 direct mining positions and 2,100 support positions. I know we will be able to work will all stakeholders to develop and pass this important legislation for our state.

Congratulations, New Eagle Scouts

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Court of Honor ceremony for Eagle Scout, Cody Lane. Cody is a member of Troop 328 in Salem. He earned 49 merit badges and completed his Eagle project at Richard Bong State Park.

I was also able to attend the ceremony of Barrett Frost and Daniel Istvanek, members of Troop 435 in Kenosha. Barrett earned 37 merit badges and completed a project at the Green Ridge Cemetery. Daniel earned 27 badges and completed a project for the Boys and Girls Club in Kenosha.

Congratulations also to Steven Hohs, whose ceremony I was not able to attend. Steven is a member of Troop 595 in Pleasant Prairie, earned 39 merit badges and completed a project at a local assisted living center.

Nominate a Youth for Kenosha County Youth in Governance

UW Extension is accepting nominations for high school students for the Kenosha County Youth in Governance Program. This program allows highly-motivated youth the opportunity to serve for a whole year as an advisory member of one of the Kenosha County Board's committees. This is a great program that helps students gain instrumental leadership skills and first-hand knowledge about the workings of local government in our area. The requirements to participate are that the student must be a Kenosha County resident in the 10th or 11th grade with a GPA of 2.5 or above. Also, the youth must be able to attend monthly committee meetings and other scheduled meetings. Any adult can nominate a youth they think has the interest and potential to be selected for the program. For a nomination form and more information about the program, contact John de Montmollin at Kenosha County UW Extension at 262-857-1945. I encourage you to nominate a student you know for this fantastic opportunity.
