Unemployment Rate Drops

State Representative Joan Ballweg (R- Markesan) chair of the Committee of Labor and Workforce Development commented on a release by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In April 2011, the unemployment rate was 7.5 percent in Wisconsin, the unemployment rate declined to 6.7 percent in April 2012.

Due to our state having three consecutive months with the unemployment rate under 7 percent, we no longer qualify for the 13-week tier 3 federal unemployment compensation program. This is according to regulations put forth by the US Department of Labor, with these changes; the number of weeks that a person will be eligible to collect UI benefits will be 60 weeks, instead of 73 weeks.

Department of Workforce Development with be sending letters to claimants to inform them of the changes.

“With the rate dropping continuously and the positive job growth numbers for 2011, plus potential savings from this change shows our Wisconsin initiatives are working,” stated Ballweg.

Wisconsin Picnic at the Governor’s Request

State Representative Joan Ballweg (R- Markesan) released the following statement about the “Brat Summit” held on Tuesday.

“My husband Tom and I along with my staff attended the picnic at the Governor’s Mansion; we had a wonderful time talking with other legislators and staff. There were almost 100 legislators from both political parties. It is my belief that this social gathering will be the first step to working out our differences and having a good working relationship in the future.

“The day was filled with conversation, food and drink donated by local businesses served up by our Governor. Thank you to the Governor and the businesses that donated the food.”

DATCP launches Facebook page

Wisconsin’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has launched a Facebook page for the Bureau of Consumer Protection:

http://www.facebook.com/wiconsumer

This page has been launched to help Wisconsin consumers, businesses and media representatives find the latest news on specific consumer topics including:

product safety
scams
identity theft
weights and measures
civil forfeitures

The page will also feature the Bureau’s “Consumer Alert” and general news releases.

As we receive information on emerging scams from the public, we will post updates through this Facebook page. We hope the page will give consumers a chance to share experiences that might alert others to active scams.

Despite the potential for two-way dialogue with our agency through the Facebook page, DATCP will still require Wisconsin consumers to file formal written complaints if they have a grievance against a company.

You can still find, like and comment on other DATCP agency news and events, including consumer information, at www.facebook.com/widatcp.
