Jobs Numbers
State Representative Joan Ballweg (R- Markesan) commented on a new jobs report released by the Department of Workforce Development Secretary, Reggie Newson. The report states that Wisconsin actually gained over 23,000 jobs from December 2010 to December 2011; a sharp contrast from others claiming we lost 33,900 jobs last year.
The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages report that was used is compiled from tax reports from 96 percent of Wisconsin businesses. The Current Employment Survey (CES) report claims Wisconsin’s job loss was based on a survey sample of 3.5 percent of Wisconsin businesses.
“I am pleased to see these new job numbers from a source that truly shows the movement and new life in Wisconsin’s economy,” states Ballweg, “The continued drop in our state unemployment rate and the recently announced increases in tax revenue support these job numbers.”
UW- Madison Economist Andrew Reschovsky has been quoted in articles that this report is a more accurate reflection of the jobs numbers in both the public and private sector.
“The jobs legislation passed last year can be credited for this positive and welcomed growth,” states Ballweg.
8th Annual Joan Ballweg Leadership Scholarship Winners
State Representative Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan) presented three out of six scholarship winners last week. The Representative made visits to Wautoma, Wild Rose and Laconia High Schools.
These scholarships are awarded to individuals who demonstrate a balance in their activities, achieve good grades and are outstanding role models and leaders among their peers.
Matthew O’Leary, a student at Rosendale-Brandon, is a proven leader as a member of FFA and 4-H, serving as President of the Laconia FFA and Weeping Willow 4-H Club. He has also been active in football, band, and National Honor Society. One of his recommendation letters read: “Matthew excels at time management and responsibility. He works monthly or weekly at the local food pantry depending on the needs of others. He recognizes the value of this type of community service and trust involved when assisting others in need.”
Ian Pomplin, a student at Wautoma High School, has lead his Boy Scout Troop, earning the scout’s highest rank of Eagle Scout. He also represented his school at Badger Boys State and is active in baseball, student council and Link Crew. One of his recommendation letters read: “He is focused, disciplined, a natural leader and an all around great guy.”
Jon Cochrane, a student at Wild Rose, is Captain of his football, basketball and track teams. Along with being selected to represent his high school at Badger Boys State, he has been active in Key Club and is dedicated to his musical studies. One of his recommendation letters described his expression as he plays the violin, “It reveals a depth of feeling, imagination and maturity that is beyond a person of his years.”
“It was an honor to reward students that took on a leadership role in their high school,” states Ballweg. “My hope is they will continue their leadership roles in college and with their future employers.”
St John's Catholic School in Princeton visits the Capitol
It's always such a pleasure to meet with school groups from our area at the State Capitol. This past week, 3rd and 4th graders from St. Johns Catholic School visited the Capitol.
