Taxpayers Win with Savings Achieved through Reforms

State Representative Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan) commented on savings in the 41st Assembly District resulting from Governor Walker’s budget reforms, which he announced today has saved the state’s taxpayers over $1 billion.

The documented savings have been compiled through media reports, local budgets and surveys of local government officials. These reforms are one of the reasons that property taxes for the median Wisconsin home went down for the first time in over a decade. Property taxes went down 0.4 percent, lowering the tax bill for the average homeowner $39.

In the 41st Assembly District we saw a significant savings of over $7 million dollars in various school districts. For example, Ripon School District was able to negotiate a change to the school day that will save nearly $300,000 annually while still offering electives that aren’t offered in other parts of the region.

The School District of Westfield is reporting property taxes dropped by $917,680 ($444,000 in savings was realized by switching their insurance provider for a portion of their contract year: October 1, 2011-July 1, 2012).

“Our local governments and schools were flexible in dealing with the fiscal reforms implemented last year. They continue to provide good services while respecting the taxpayer,” said Ballweg.
