Ballweg Bills Advancing in
Wisconsin
Assembly Bill 269 regarding
increased penalties for violations of 72-hour no-contact order. With recent statistics showing that one in four
women will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime, the
proposed legislation will strengthen protections for victims and
witnesses of domestic violence crimes by providing penalties that
more closely match the severity of the underlying crime. It will
increase the violation from a monetary fine to a Class A
misdemeanor, which will help serve as a greater deterrent. This
bill has also passed both houses and is on it's way to the Governor for
his signature.
Senate Bill 416 (Assembly Bill
549) was brought before the
Assembly on Thursday and passed with a voice vote in favor of
passage. Senate Bill 416 (AB 549) relates to adopting
amendments to the Uniform Commercial Code Article 9, relating to
secured transactions, recommended by the National Conference of
Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. It is a technical bill that
updates Wisconsin's law to reflect changes in Article 9. It is meant
to coordinate laws amongst the 50 states regarding
loans, collateral, and transactions which deal with personal property.
This bill has passed both houses and is on it's way to the
Governor for his signature.
