Wausau

A reminder that there is another important
meeting occurring this Wednesday, October 30th in Wausau.
The state Senate and Assembly select legislative committees to review Common
Core Standards (CCS) in Wisconsin will be meeting at Northcentral
Technical College from 2:00-8:00pm. The
committee has been holding hearings across the state, most recently in Fond
du Lac and Eau Claire, and has heard from hundreds of parents, educators,
and concerned citizens.
Common Core sets federal standards for student performance at each grade
level. There are several goals that the legislative committee is aiming to
accomplish:
1. Compare and contrast existing Wisconsin education
standards with CCS
2. Identify best practices currently used in college
and career readiness standards
3. Provide recommendations on the future of
implementation of CCS in Wisconsin schools
The hearings will include both invited
speakers and public testimony. If you are unable to attend in person, all
hearings will be broadcast on Wisconsin
Eye.
Update on Rural Schools Task Force
Last week on Wednesday October 23rd, our
Rural Schools Task Force held its first meeting in Rhinelander. During the

Rhinelander High School.

Our afternoon session was the public hearing portion, where we heard from
several local superintendents about the unique needs of their rural
districts. There was also interesting discussion with staff from the
Northwoods Broadband Development Coalition, and leaders from local
manufacturers testified on their need for skilled manufacturing and trade
labor. The next meeting will be November 6, at the Mauston School
District in central Wisconsin.

2013 Capitol Christmas Tree Theme:
Wisconsin Traditions
![](http://legis.wisconsin.gov/eupdates/asm35/christmas-banner_0.jpg)
It’s hard to believe, but Christmas is
already less than two months away. All art teachers, parents,
youth, and others across Wisconsin are invited to help decorate the Capitol
Christmas tree. The theme of the tree this year is Wisconsin
Traditions. According to the announcement from the Governor:
“Some pastimes, activities, and events have been bringing families
together for decades,” Governor Walker said.
“It may be watching the Packers, or deer hunting, or getting together
for an annual Harley ride. This year we want the Capitol Christmas tree to
reflect all of the things that make Wisconsin great.”
Ornaments symbolizing Wisconsin traditions will be displayed on the 2013
Capitol Christmas tree.
Anyone interested in sending Wisconsin Traditions themed ornaments to
decorate the tree should make their submissions by Friday, November 22nd.
Please send Wisconsin Traditions themed ornaments to:
