Happy New
Year!
I was honored to be joined by my wife Julie, in-laws
Bob and Barb Ahrens, and my grandson Roman for the inauguration
ceremony at the State Capitol on Monday, January 5th. The book you see in front of us has been signed by every
State Legislature since 1871 - a neat piece of history!
As we kicked off the 2015-2016
Legislative Session, I was reminded what a privilege it is to
represent you in the 25th Assembly District. and the great weight we
have to continue moving Wisconsin forward through smart legislation
that reforms government, promotes job growth and strengthens our
state's economy.
Increasing the Speed Limit to
70MPH
I am introducing a bill in the coming weeks to give
the Department of Transportation the flexibility to raise the speed
limit to 70mph on sections of Wisconsin highways where it is deemed
safe. As the only state in the upper Midwest and one of only 13
states in the country with speed limits lower than 70mph, this is an important bill to bring
Wisconsin up to speed with our neighboring states.
Assembly Rule Changes
This week we passed several rule changes to make floor proceedings
more transparent and efficient in the Assembly. The new
Assembly rules were derived from the Memorandum of Understanding
that the Assembly operated under last session. They establish a goal of
finishing debates at a reasonable hour and allowing the Rules
Committee, composed of both Republicans and Democrats, to decide the
structure and timing of debate. Vigorous and respectful debate is a
cornerstone of a strong democracy, and these rule changes continue
Wisconsin's strong history of that tradition.
Founders Quote
"But if we are to be told by a foreign power ... what we shall do,
and what we shall not do, we have Independence yet to seek, and have
contended hitherto for very little." --George Washington, letter to
Alexander Hamilton, 1796
