July 7th, 2017

No committee meetings were held and legislative activity ground to a complete stop this week as Republican lawmakers continue to struggle with a state budget that is now a week overdue.  While Gov. Walker and Legislative Republicans held a series of closed-door meetings, little progress has been made to fund schools, road projects and other key state priorities. The budget-writing Joint Finance Committee hasn’t met publicly since June 15th and no upcoming meetings have been scheduled at this time.

Budget Update

The budget-writing Joint Finance Committee hasn’t met publicly for over three weeks as Republican infighting derailed the committee process and caused the state to miss its July 1st budget deadline. While Gov. Walker proposed a new transportation plan that cuts state funding and seeks more federal aid, Republicans and Democrats largely dismissed the proposal as short-sighted and inadequate. As the budget delay continues, schools and communities will face greater uncertainty over their local budgets and important construction projects.

Senate Session

There were no committee meetings held this week. Although there are numerous bills ready for a hearing, Republican legislators that set the committee schedule refuse to take up common-sense reforms offered by both Democrats and Republicans.
