Rep. Neylon Votes to Require UW System to Follow State Law

Pewaukee — Pewaukee – Today State Rep. Adam Neylon issued the following statement in response to a vote in the Joint Committee for Review of Administrative Rules (JCRAR) directing the University of Wisconsin System to promulgate their COVID-19 policies as an Emergency Rule under s. 227.26 (2) (b):

“Today JCRAR voted to require the UW System to promulgate rules for COVID policies on campus. The administrative rule-making process exists for a reason. Rules have the same impact as law. They should be clear, straightforward and subject to oversight by a body of elected representatives. This process exists to promote fairness, transparency and accountability.

“As of now, several UW campuses are seeking masking and testing policies enacted on campuses with university police departments reserving the ability to enforce such policies. What comes next? The idea that a university chancellor has the power to unilaterally require vaccinations is an incredibly dangerous precedent to set and precisely the power they seek by circumventing the rule-making process.

“If the UW System wants to implement COVID policies on campus they should follow the process set forth in state law. I would imagine Wisconsin’s public university system would welcome that type of transparency and accountability.”
