Let's Stay Connected

I hope all is well. It’s safe to say Madison has been very busy the past few weeks. Between committee hearings, task forces, and the recent floor session I haven’t been able to fill you in on all the fun stuff happening in your State Capitol. I encourage you to like my Facebook page so you can stay more up-to-date on the legislative issues I’m tackling in Madison and what I’m up to in our community.

Legislation Update

Suicide Prevention

I have been working hard with the Speaker’s Task Force on Suicide Prevention in writing policy recommendations which will help reduce the rate of suicide across Wisconsin. Below are some of the bills we introduced:

  • LRB 3871:$250,000 per year to Department of Health Services to administer prevention programs, hire of suicide prevention director
  • LRB 3872: $250,000 per year for grants to local governments, groups for prevention programs
  • LRB 4241: $75,000 per year to provide training and materials to organizations, including staff of firing ranges or firearms retailers
  • LRB 4373:$250,000 per year to DPI to fund peer-to-peer prevention programs in schools
  • LRB 4247: $55,000 per year for tuition for low-income farmers who take technical college course in farm, business management
  • LRB 4178: Require prevention information, hotline number on students’ IDs

I was pleased to sit down with Rep. Joan Ballweg to discuss our bipartisan work throughout the task force along with our reasoning behind the introduced proposals. I encourage you to watch the discussion here.

Assembly Floor Session

Protecting Wisconsin Families

The Wisconsin State Assembly was in session last week and voted on a number of bills. One of those bills, Senate Bill 266, was a bill I introduced. I am pleased to share the bill was unanimously voted on and passed both houses. Please read my press release to learn more about the bill and how it will help the families of law enforcement officers who die in the line of duty.

First Responder of the Year Award

As you may recall, I have been asking for nominations to award a First Responder in our community. I had the great honor to meet and present my First Responder of the Year Award to Jerry Roesler of the Shelby Fire Department. His commitment and sacrifice to make our community safe is beyond remarkable.

What Else is Happening?

Panel on Suicide Prevention

The Speaker’s Task Force on Suicide Prevention had a panel at the Capitol. Many Legislators outside the task force came to learn about this issue - serving as Vice-Chair has been an honor.

Suicide Prevention in Our Community

I had the opportunity to speak at the 5th Annual Mini Donut Half Marathon in Onalaska. If you are unaware of this group, they raise thousands of dollars each year for suicide prevention efforts in our community. Thank you so much to the organizers and all who participated.

Professor Joe Heims’ Retirement

It was an honor to be part of the group of legislators and community members who recognized Professor Joe Heim on his retirement. Joe has been universally admired for his in-depth, bipartisan insights into politics at the local, state and federal levels.
