Reps. Shelton and Hong Reintroduce Economic Justice Bill of Rights

Shelton: “We have a chance to reverse” economic insecurity for workers,

Hong: “This resolution outlines a vision to protect the American promise.”

MADISON - On the Assembly Floor this morning, Representative Kristina Shelton (D - Green Bay) and Representative Francesca Hong (D - Madison) reintroduced the Economic Justice Bill of Rights. Over 30 community members, including community activists, small business leaders and state legislators were in attendance to show their support for this crucial legislation.

The Economic Justice Bill of Rights proclaims 10 Rights that set a foundation for a more prosperous Wisconsin for all. The resolution builds on its prior introductions in 2021 and 2022 with a few language changes. It calls for dignity at work and a living wage; adequate funding for public schools and child care; protecting public and private unions and collective bargaining; affordable and accessible health care; a healthy environment; decent and sustainable infrastructure; safe and affordable housing and broadband; equitable access to capital; restorative justice; participatory civic life; and self-determination.

Representative Hong remarked:

“This resolution outlines a vision to protect the American promise — the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — and identifies a clear path forward to ensuring economic security for workers, small businesses, farmers, and many more Wisconsinites. It draws on our shared history, reminding us that during times of collective struggle we must build radical solidarity across our many divides.” Rep. Hong continued, “From Madison to Oconomowoc, Superior to Readstown, we must re-invest in the people of this state and commit to empowering them of their own potential. A better Wisconsin is possible only when we don’t leave anyone behind – economic anxieties should not stand in the way of the American promise.”

Representative Shelton remarked:

“Working people in our state are facing real and valid anxieties about their economic security, safety, and whether Wisconsin is a place for them. Economic security for workers has never been less guaranteed, but we have a chance to reverse this. With a $7 billion budget surplus, there is enough to make sure everyone has to provide the basic necessities of life,” Rep. Shelton added. “Since its initial release two years ago, the bill of rights has been the foundation for many state legislative Democrats and partner organizations. No single person can advance this vision alone. It will take all of us to actualize the promise to which we have committed.”
