Reopening Wisconsin Press Conference

Yesterday, I joined a number of my Assembly Republican colleagues at a regional press conference in Appleton to advocate for a regional reopening of our state's economy. Joining us were business owners from Northeastern Wisconsin who are being negatively impacted by Governor Evers’s “safer at home” order. Together we are urging Governor Evers to abandon his one size-fits-all approach to reopening Wisconsin by adopting a regional plan of action like many other states around the nation.

The dramatic impacts of the “safer at home” order cannot be understated. More than half a million people have filed for unemployment since the start of the pandemic. Yesterday, the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau released a memorandum discussing general fund tax collections for the month of April, 2020, and tax collections for the first ten months of this fiscal year. The memo shows April collections were $870 million lower than April of last year and the first ten months of the fiscal year are $313 million lower than the first ten months of the previous fiscal year.

At the press conference I was asked about how reopening our economy could impact the state budget. Click below to watch my response.

I continue to urge Governor Evers to reverse course to provide relief to the thousands of Wisconsinites who are suffering at the hand of his order. Together we can come up with a Wisconsin plan that protects our most vulnerable, while at the same time ensuring we prevent unnecessary financial ruin.

Department of Workforce Development Letter

Earlier this week, along with 35 of my colleagues, I sent a letter to Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Caleb Frotstman urging his team to explore all options necessary to speed up the processing of unemployment insurance claims.

We believe that one option DWD should explore is developing pre-approval procedures for certain Unemployment Insurance claims that have a high likelihood of approval pending any reviews the Department may need to conduct. Similar practices are done in Medicaid to allow vulnerable individuals to receive healthcare as expeditiously as possible.”

Over the last few weeks, elected officials have been contacted by thousands of constituents who have had trouble with the DWD and receiving unemployment insurance. Given the unprecedented amount of individuals applying for unemployment assistance, DWD has been overwhelmed with requests.

You can read the letter here.
