Thank you for taking a few minutes to check out the latest edition of my new and improved e-updates! I hope you find it informative. Due to a technical issue my e-update last week was not able to be sent out until Monday which is why you are receiving two this week.

This upcoming Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a law proclaiming every third Monday in January as Martin Luther King Jr. Day to honor Dr. King for his work as the most prominent civil rights figure of the Twentieth Century. Dr. King gained notoriety for being the leader and spokesman of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and an advocate for peaceful forms of protest. In 1963 Dr. King gave one of the greatest speeches in history on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial known as the "I Have a Dream" speech. The work Dr. King did is something we can all aspire to and emulate in our daily lives.
Bill to Increase Hunting Opportunities Advances
As part of my day in Madison on Wednesday, I participated in a Sporting Heritage Committee meeting. The committee voted to recommend passage on three bills including one I've authored, Assembly Bill (AB) 677. This bill would increase the number of pheasants that the Department of Natural Resources is required to produce each year and require the department to create a schedule for stocking pheasants around the state. The Senate version of this bill, Senate Bill 609, has already been approved by the Senate. With its approval by the Assembly committee, I hope to see this legislation come before the full Assembly soon.

AB 677 is a part of the Sporting Freedom Package which seeks to improve opportunities and reduce burdensome regulations for Wisconsin sportsmen and women. If you would like to learn more about this bill you can click here to read my testimony from the public hearing. If you would like to read a little more about the entire package of bills you can click here to check out the Sporting Freedom Package website.
After the votes by the committee, we heard testimony on several other bills related to a number of topics. You can click on each bill number below to learn more information about the bills the committee heard.
  • Assembly Bill 161 - Relating to the disability rating at which veterans qualify for certain hunting and fishing authorizations and exemptions from state park and trail admission fees.
  • Assembly Bill 434 - Relating to hunting and fishing approvals for persons with disabilities.
  • Assembly Bill 576 - Relating to raffling lake sturgeon culled from state fish hatcheries.

Also, if you know of any other events, please contact my office and let me know, so I can include them in a future e-update and try to attend myself.
