A Note from Rep. Edming

Thank you for taking the time to read this edition of my e-update. I hope you find it informative. Below I discuss the Assembly's floor session from last week where we considered an override of one of Governor Evers' vetoes. I also share a bit about my "Around the 87th" District Day in the Hayward area last Thursday.

In addition, there are a number of exciting events coming up around the 87th Assembly District in the weeks ahead. For more information check out the Around the 87th section of my e-update.

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any thoughts on issues before the legislature or if you need assistance with a state agency.

Voting to Fix the Governor's Mistake

Back in June, I shared that the Assembly had approved legislation to encourage unemployed Wisconsinites to return to work by ending our state's participation in the temporary federal unemployment insurance (UI) benefit programs. This legislation, Assembly Bill (AB) 336, was also approved by the State Senate but unfortunately, it was vetoed by Governor Evers.

Just like when AB 336 was approved by the Assembly, I continue to hear from employers around the 87th District who are struggling to find enough employees to meet their needs. Many of these employers are offering family-supporting wages with benefits and some are even offering sign-on bonuses. With all of the jobs available around the 87th and across the state, it just does not make sense to continue to provide the enhanced federal UI benefits that encourage people to remain on the sidelines.
That is why I voted last week to override Governor Evers' veto of AB 336. Unfortunately, my Assembly Democratic colleagues chose to stand by the governor's mistake instead of helping our state's struggling small businesses. If you would like to listen to my floor speech in favor of the veto override you can click here or on the picture below.

After this veto override attempt, I spent part of my day last week Thursday talking with some business owners in the Hayward area about the negative impact of these enhanced unemployment benefits. Click here or on the picture below to watch a video where some of them share their stories.

Behind the Scenes the
Lumberjack World Championships

This past weekend the Lumberjack World Championships returned to the historic Lumberjack Bowl in Hayward. Each year many of the best lumberjacks and lumberjills from around the world come to Hayward to compete in the world's premier timber sports event.

As a part of my district day last Thursday, I had the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at this world-class event right in the 87th District.
Events like the Lumberjack World Championships are incredibly important to the tourism reliant economy in the Hayward area and it was great to hear from event organizers, competitors, and locals who were excited for its return this year. I even had the opportunity to get a close-up look at one of the hot saws used by one of the competitors. Be on the lookout for a video of my time at Lumberjack Bowl in a future e-update.

Visit to North Star Camp

To finish off my day in the Hayward area, I stopped by North Star Camp for Boys. Back in May, I shared that the Summer Camp Regulatory Reform Package that I helped bring forward was signed into law by Governor Evers. The effort to eliminate government red tape for Wisconsin summer camps started back towards the end of the 2017-2018 session when some camp owners, including Andy Shlensky, from North Star, reached out to me with an idea on how to make it easier for doctors licensed in other states to practice at camps in Wisconsin. The camp doctor bill became the first bill in the Summer Camp Regulatory Reform Package and after years of hard work, it was great to see this important reform become law.

During my time at North Star, I presented the camp with a copy of the new law that they help create and also had the chance to visit with
Andy and Dr. Bill Lisberg about the positive impact that this new law will have. By a stroke of luck, it happened to be the week that Bill was volunteering at camp as he is the doctor who brought the idea for this reform to Andy. To learn more about the impact of this new law be sure to be looking for a video in an upcoming e-update.

Around the 87th

One of my favorite parts about serving as your state representative is getting out and interacting with constituents at many of the wonderful community events across the 87th District. Check out some of the upcoming events around the district below. Also, if you know of any other events, please contact my office and let me know, so I can include them in a future e-update and try to attend myself.
