Welcome to a special edition of my e-update. It is another action-packed week at the State Capitol, and there is so much to share that I thought I would provide you with a brief mid-week update. As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any thoughts on issues before the legislature or if you need assistance with a state agency.
Honoring Two American Heroes
A very special part of Tuesday's floor session was honoring two deserving Rusk County World War II veterans, Elmer Wisherd and Clarence Stine, as Assembly Hometown Heroes. I have had the pleasure of knowing both Clarence and Elmer for many years. They have both given so much, not only serving our nation during World War II but also in their service to the community in the many years since. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of being recognized as Hometown Heroes than them. It was an honor to introduce them to my colleagues and present them with the award on the behalf of the Assembly. Congratulations Clarence and Elmer!

Also, I would like to thank Dave Roth and Mark Hanson from Sons of AmVets Squadron 127 in Ladysmith and Mark's wife Laurie for making sure that Elmer, Clarence, and Clarence's wife Irene made it safely to Madison for the ceremony. It would not have been possible without them.

If you would like to watch the ceremony you can click on the video below.
State of the Tribes Address
In addition to the Hometown Heroes ceremony, the other special event that took place yesterday was the annual State of the Tribes Address. Each year, members of Wisconsin's 11 tribal nations come to the Capitol to provide an update on the state of the tribes in our state and share their priorities with the Legislature. I am honored to represent the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in the legislature and the State of the Tribes Address is always a special occasion. If you would like to view the address you can click on the video below.
This year's address was delivered by Shannon Holsey
the President of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band.
Bill to Aid Service Members and Their Families Heads to the Governor

Later during Tuesday's floor session, the Assembly approved legislation that I brought forward with Sen. Kooyenga, Senate Bill (SB) 605. This proposal allows relocated service members, their spouse, and dependents to be considered residents of Wisconsin for the purposes of paying in-state tuition at a public university or technical college in Wisconsin.

Those who serve in the military and their families make great sacrifices for our state and nation. One of the challenges faced by service members and their families is being required to relocate to a new post. Unfortunately, if the spouse or parent of a student at one of our state’s public technical colleges or universities is relocated outside of Wisconsin due to their military service, it may cause the student to lose their state residency status and force them to pay out-of-state tuition.

Those who serve in the armed forces and their families make incredible sacrifices for our state and nation. The least we can do is to make sure that they do not get stuck paying out-of-state tuition when they are forced to relocate outside of Wisconsin due to their or their loved one’s military service.

SB 605 has cleared both houses of the legislature and now heads to Governor Evers’ desk where I hope he will sign it into law.

Around the 87th
One of my favorite parts about serving as your state representative is getting out and interacting with constituents at many of the wonderful community events across the 87th District. Check out some of the upcoming events around the district below. Also, if you know of any other events, please contact my office and let me know, so I can include them in a future e-update and try to attend myself.

Stay Up to Date
One of the best ways to stay up to date with what is going on in Madison is to sign up for the legislature's notification tracking service. This service allows you to follow legislative activity in Madison. Once you create a free account you can sign up to receive notifications about specific bills or committees as well as legislative activity pertaining to a subject area (i.e. agriculture, veterans). You can sign up for this service at notify.legis.wisconsin.gov.
