A Note from Rep. Edming

Thank you for reading my e-update this week. I hope everyone is having a great summer so far and getting out to enjoy the many awesome community events around the 87th Assembly District. If you haven't had the opportunity yet this summer there are a number of events coming up over the next several weeks and you can find more information about some of these events in the Around the 87th section below.

This week I also discuss how one of the governor's line-item vetoes of the 2021-23 State Budget will cause a delay in income tax relief reaching Wisconsinites.

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any thoughts on issues before the legislature or if you need assistance with a state agency.

Budget Veto Delays Tax Relief

As I shared in my most recent e-update, when Governor Evers signed the 2021-2023 State Budget into law last week he used his powerful line-item veto power to make changes to the budget before signing it into law. One of these vetoes will have the effect of delaying the income tax relief that was part of this budget proposal.

For you to see the income tax relief in your paycheck the Department of Revenue needs to update the state tax withholding tables so less money is taken out of each paycheck. Under the budget as approved by the legislature, the Department of Revenue would have been required to update these withholding tables no later than October 1st. Unfortunately for Wisconsin taxpayers, Governor Evers vetoed this provision. This means instead of seeing income tax relief in your paychecks this year you will have to wait until you file your taxes next year. Basically, this amounts to you giving the state a no-interest loan for the next several months instead of having more money in your pocket this year.

While I am pleased that Governor Evers embraced the historic $3.4 billion in tax relief that Republicans in the legislature sent him instead of the over $1 billion in tax increases that he proposed, through his veto he chose to delay tax relief for Wisconsin taxpayers.

Entering the Trades

On Thursday, I was pleased to attend Ethan Wenker's signing day ceremony in Eau Claire. Ethan is a recent graduate of Flambeau High School and will be joining the team at The Boldt Company as a carpentry apprentice. I'm grateful to the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters for inviting me to participate in this important event. Best wishes to Ethan as he begins his career in carpentry!

Capitol Tours Resume

The Wisconsin State Capitol building in Madison is, in my opinion, the best in the nation. I am pleased to share that guided tours of the building have now resumed. Our State Capitol has a rich history and a unique beauty that I encourage everyone to experience on a guided tour. If you are going to be in the Madison area this summer I encourage you to check it out. To learn more about a tour of the Capitol or to schedule a tour click here to visit the official tour website. Also, if you are in the building please feel free to stop by my office, Room 109 West, and hopefully, I will be available to say hello.

Around the 87th

One of my favorite parts about serving as your state representative is getting out and interacting with constituents at many of the wonderful community events across the 87th District. Check out some of the upcoming events around the district below. Also, if you know of any other events, please contact my office and let me know, so I can include them in a future e-update and try to attend myself.

Stay Up to Date

One of the best ways to stay up to date with what is going on in Madison is to sign up for the legislature's notification tracking service. This service allows you to follow legislative activity in Madison. Once you create a free account you can sign up to receive notifications about specific bills or committees as well as legislative activity pertaining to a subject area (i.e. agriculture, veterans). You can sign up for this service at notify.legis.wisconsin.gov.
