A Note from Rep. Edming

Thank you for taking the time to read this week's e-update. After many months of hard work, the legislature completed its work on the state budget this week and it is now on Governor Evers' desk for his consideration. I look forward to sharing information about the reasonable, responsible, and realistic budget that the legislature passed below.

I would like to thank everyone who reached out to my office over the past several months to share your thoughts on our state's two-year spending plan. Your feedback helped me to better advocate on your behalf.

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any thoughts on issues before the legislature or if you need assistance with a state agency.

A Strong Budget for Wisconsin

Since Governor Evers proposed his state budget back in February, I’ve been listening to the hardworking people of the 87th Assembly District and gathering feedback on this two-year spending plan for our state. From the meetings around the district during my six in-district budget office hours, the over 850 survey responses, the many contacts to my office, and conversations with folks around the district, I heard about your priorities for our state budget. As the budget worked its way through the legislative process, I advocated on behalf of the people of the 87th District and worked to get as many of your priorities addressed as possible.

One of the top priorities I heard about from constituents is the need for tax relief. I am pleased that this budget delivers on that priority with a historic $3.4 billion tax relief package targeting at the middle class. This plan will reduce the tax burden on many individuals and families around the 87th District and incorporates legislation I authored that exempts active duty military pay from state income taxes. In addition, another piece of legislation that was passed on Tuesday, Assembly Bill 191, repeals the personal property tax which is great news for small businesses around the 87th and across the state.

Another budget priority for the citizens of the 87th District is investing in our roads and bridges. I am proud that this budget builds upon the increased funding for our local roads from last session by investing over $130 million in state highway rehabilitation and $100 million in the Local Road Improvement Program (LRIP). The investment in the LRIP is a $25 million increase over what was proposed by the governor.

With legislation the size of the state budget, there are always going to be some parts that I do not agree with. However, this budget proposal addresses a number of the priorities for the people I represent in the 87th District in a reasonable, responsible, and realistic manner which is why it earned my support. AB 68 was approved by the Assembly
with bipartisan support on Tuesday and passed by the state Senate with bipartisan support on Wednesday. This bipartisan budget now heads to Governor Evers' desk for his consideration.

VFW Legislator of the Year

This past Friday I had the tremendous honor of accepting the "Legislator of the Year" award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars - Department of Wisconsin during their annual convention in Green Bay. Those who serve our nation in the armed forces make many sacrifices to protect the freedoms we all hold dear. I am proud to be an advocate for our veterans and I am committed to continuing to advance policies to make our state better for those who defended our nation.
