Happy Mother's Day

Wishing a very happy Mother's Day to moms across Wisconsin. Your importance cannot be overstated. I hope you all have a wonderful Mother's Day weekend.

Hmong and Asian American Education Legislation

This week, I introduced legislation with Senator Eric Wimberger that updates the state’s statutory educational goals to expand the existing requirement that students receive education on human relations as related to various different racial and cultural groups to include education on Hmong Americans and American Pacific Islander Desi Americans.

Wisconsin is home to the third largest population of Hmong Americans of any state, and both our Hmong American and APIDA populations have grown significantly since 2000. This legislation is an important step towards increasing education and awareness about these important communities.

Budget and Committee Updates

This week, the Joint Finance Committee held some of the earliest votes on the state budget. The votes removed all non-fiscal policy from the budget (the largest amount of policy in history). It is my hope that we can craft a budget that responsibly protects taxpayers while meeting the needs of Wisconsin.

Mental Health

The Committee passed two bills creating different grants for suicide prevention. Suicide is all too common in our communities and I am glad to be part of efforts to increase awareness and prevention of this tragedy.

Substance Abuse and Prevention

The Committee heard testimony from lawmakers, experts, and members of the public on a bill that would create an opioid and methamphetamine data system that would track and analyze Wisconsin trends.

Family Law

The Committee passed on a bill that would expand the types of judges allowed to officiate weddings, a bill to simplify the process for obtaining marriage licenses, and a bill that would establish training requirements for legal guardians of children.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update

All Wisconsinites age 16 and over are eligible for COVID-19 vaccines. However be aware that, some areas of the state may have a higher demand for vaccinations and may have waitlists. Vaccine providers will prioritize anyone previously eligible such as public-facing essential workers and people with medical conditions.

The Marathon County Community Vaccine Clinic at Northcentral Technical College's Center for Business and Industry is still operating from 11 am to 7 pm, Monday through Saturday. To make an appointment, please use the WI COVID-19 registry.
